Description

The type of potato you will grow also has an impact on the end result, most gardeners prefer growing early potatoes in pots. The early type are ready to harvest by mid-summer, this means they are not affected by the late summer potato blight like other varieties. Our pots can be bought with saucers to fit. Our plant pot saucers act as a water retention unit, which can not only save you the mess of soily water but can provide a steady source of water to the plants it’s under. Even if it’s only been in that enclosed pot for a few weeks, it’s too late and the damage to the root system may already be done. We advise that a round pot or grow-bag cultivated Eucalyptus is never planted out in the ground to prevent it becoming a liability. Eucalyptus with badly trained roots can die in the cold or fall over in high winds.

Sometimes the pot design does differ if a different supplier is used but pot quality will not be compromised. We would never grow a Eucalyptus tree in anything else (other than the ground!), and wouldn’t recommend you do either. This is not some latest gardening fad sales-pitch, we’ve done the research in traditional round pots and thrown away the dead trees for you! With best growing practices, it’s possible to use a 10 litre rather than a 15 litre pot. It’s possible to grow most varieties successfully in an 8 litre pot too. It’s how we grow them that determines the pot size. But what about the roots? Soil types vary greatly all over the UK from light sandy soils to heavy clay soils but whatever soil type you have, there is likely to be a seed potato variety that will be suited. We are also fortunate in having 3 choices when it comes to harvesting times, from earlies, second earlies and maincrop. Early and second early potatoes are often referred to as new potatoes. These are relatively small and have light skins making them ideal for cooking whole. They are usually ready for harvesting in June or July or 12 weeks from sowing. Second early potatoes are harvested 2-3 weeks later. These varieties are the perfect choice for growing in bags at home. Selecting the right seed potatoes

Selecting the right seed potatoes

The above applies to container growing. If planting directly into the garden soil, or growing on an allotment, the bigger the root system, the better. Plants are left to “get on with it” so a root system that cover a bigger area is going to be able to find more water and nutrients. Creating the best growing conditions seed potatoes yielded 3.3lb (1.5kg) of potatoes. Most of these were golf ball sized or larger and there were few really small inedible ones. Cover the potatoes with approximately 5-10 cm of soil, don’t worry if this doesn’t seem like enough you will understand why it should be done like this later.

The long edges form the top and bottom rims of the pot. The diagonal cut edges overlap to form a seal – a bit like unfirling a cardboard loo roll tube. You could practice joining the diagonal edges together now. What's your favourite potato variety for growing in containers, and why? Leave a comment below and let everyone know.... They do not have a lovely finish like decorative ones but they are strong and designed to do the job not look pretty. However, by watering and feeding so that plants can take what they want, when they want, means that they won’t grow big root systems because they don’t need to!seed potatoes yielded 3.5lb (1.6kg) of potatoes from the same amount of compost etc. Many of these were smaller than a golf ball, although there were some larger ones. There were a lot of pea sized, inedible ones. You will know that your potatoes are ready for harvest when the plants begin flowering, although some people wait for the foliage to start dying. After all of that hard work, care and attention it is finally time to claim your reward. The are made from durable HDPE Plastic they will last many seasons before they need replacing. Please Note: All Sizes are approximate. Find the rows along one edge without any holes – this is the top of the pot and forms a hole-less rim to prevent water running off.
