In Dead Last, every player in trying to deceive the other players in a game where votes are constantly being taken to oust a player. This plays on your mind, and often you'll hear people voice: I think it's this, but I don't want to risk my badge. I’ve only seen the murderer win once, and in the future I’m going to be sure to ramp up the difficulty with some of the variants described the rulebook.

The social deduction element of Deception players represent Hong Kong’s finest, and out of them one player is chosen to be the Forensic Scientist. The theme might raise a few eyebrows, especially coming from one of the makers of the much-maligned Cards Against Humanity, but, while it’s hardly profound satire, Secret Hitler handles its subject matter very successfully. The murderer will then point to one means of murder card in front of them and one evidence card, they’ll then close their eyes.

These games allow players to be the sort of tricksters which societal contracts prevent us from being in real life. You just need to point at a card combination and say the statement 'I think this is how it happened'. With its colour-changing scales and 360-degree vision, the chameleon is the spy of the animal kingdom, so it makes sense that The Chameleon board game takes its cues from Spyfall.

The majority of social deduction games are short, to prevent the action dragging if the traitors get busted early. The scientist then chooses one of the location tiles, the cause of death tile, and four of the facedown deck. The scientist reveals their ID then everyone except the scientist is then dealt a series of four blue means cards and four red clue cards. They can still play an active part in the discussion, but can no longer make a formal attempt at solving the crime. In framing the job that way it creates an explicitly adversarial setup in the interpretation that keeps it fresh and interesting.

Then, players will close their eyes and the murderer will reveal themselves to the forensic scientist and indicate their means of murder and key evidence using the cards in front of them. After this lightning-fast setup you’re off the to the races, if one of the racehorses knew how to win the race but couldn’t speak and another racehorse was a massive liar.
