From the second round onward, after a clue-giver reads their clues, the opposing team gets a chance to guess the code prior to the active team making their guess. That mindset got me through a lot of math classes, and I’m pretty sure it’s also applicable to games of Decrypto. only to lose a couple of rounds later when those “just too specific” clues virtually gave away our keywords.

The key to this game is you will need to make sure your communications are clear enough for your team to understand but vague enough to confound your opponents! Both teams will draw a Code Card and the current codegiver for the active team will look at it and show nobody else. Collect two laser drive tokens and you can trade them in to try to guess one of the opposing teams Keywords. If they guess correctly, nothing happens – though – as they were able to look at the target words, you’d expect them to usually get it right… If the intercepting team guesses incorrectly, nothing happens. Each team is given a code screen (pictured below) and 4 cards numbered 1 through 4 with a single word printed on their faces. That said, it makes a great gift, and I think it’s a hoot to play, so if you’re looking for another team deduction game that’s a solid fit for a board game night, I’d highly recommend checking out Decrypto!

You cannot use your keywords as clues, give clues that relate to the spelling, position, or pronunciation of a keyword, or use a clue more than once per game. Once you have finished the blue key side, you take the stack of clues and start on the “Red Key” side so that you never have the same word twice in any game until you have finished the entire deck 4 times (all the cards are double sided and feature words on the top and the bottom of the cards). From round 2 onwards the opposing team gets the chance to guess your code before your own team does. In more detail, each team has their own screen, and in this screen they tuck four cards in pockets numbered 1-4, letting everyone on the same team see the words on these cards while hiding the words from the opposing team. When it hits the streets next month, I highly recommend picking up a copy and including this in your regular game nights. They also say the game is good for articulate families and enthusiastic gamers, and that it's fun to try to think of clues that only your team mate will latch on to. If you are looking for a real challenge (and to kick in the “We think we know your keyword” mechanism), you use the modifier to describe ALL of your keywords that round.

But the creeping sense of doom (the descent from the mountain of the story) is omnipresent past this point. The other team also play the same simple guessing game and everyone moves on to the next round, all smiles and success. While they never see the other side’s four holy and secret words, they hear the clues that are given and the codes guessed. Although after each game ends, we still like to attempt guessing what the other team’s Keywords are just for fun. While tabletop games and RPGs were ever-present in his youth, the intervening years were filled more with video games. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. to send, you might encrypt it by saying to your team: "sand, scoot, secret" and they'd associate the words with the positions and read out the number. If there is a tie (whether one team has 2 of each type, or both teams have two of the same type), then each team calculates their score with each positive marker being worth +1 point and each penalty marker being worth -1 point. But every so often, a casual game will rise above your typical Cards Against Humanity and Codenames (yes, I’m looking at you with a side-eye, Codenames) fare.
