What does it mean to "be you"--that is, to have a specific, conscious experience of the world around you and yourself within it? All this is God’s doing, for he has reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ; and he has made us agents of the reconciliation. It is widely agreed that experience arises from a physical basis, but we have no good explanation of why and how it so arises. The term "born again" is used by several Christian denominations, but there are disagreements on what the term means, and whether members of other denominations are justified in claiming to be born-again Christians. But I’ve never really come across a precise definition that could be a satisfactory starting point for examining it. More precisely, for Chalmers, there is no conceptual obstacle to easy problems eventually yielding to explanations in terms of physical mechanisms. I've always favored Nagel's approach because it emphasizes phenomenology: the subjective properties of conscious experience, such as why a visual experience has the form, structure, and qualities that it does, as compared to the subjective properties of an emotional experience, or of an olfactory experience.
