About this deal

The kit contains everything you need to know to start growing small spiky cacti family easily in your home or office. In appearance, cactus compost looks gritty due to the high proportion of fine grit or coarse sand it contains. Many are grey-green, but colours can range through all shades of green to yellows, dark purples and reds. The minerals in tap water can build up to damaging levels in the compost and can leave white chalky deposits on the leaves of succulents. During the winter rest period, decrease waterings to once every four weeks (and every six weeks for some desert species).

Whilst growing one of these trees from seed can be challenging, nurturing your Bonsai from seed is incredibly rewarding. We recommend a bright warm home for your cactus friend and don't forget to water your plant baby every 3 days.

Most cacti and succulents are grown indoors as houseplants, in pots of free-draining, gritty compost. In general, an indoor cactus plant should last for ten years, but some delicate species might only last a few months. Large specimens – such as Aeonium 'Zwartkop' – in terracotta pots can look particularly impressive and sculptural on a sunny patio or doorstep in summer, although most will need protection over winter. In its natural habitat, desert cactus is accustomed to very chilly nights and some species can even withstand nights that dip to 35 degrees Fahrenheit. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Got as a secret Santa gift, and planted back in march, so a little over 6 months growth - looking great, and about ready to upsize into a bigger pot. I don’t know wether that effected the plants but I have less to no mould in the 2nd pot and they’re doing better than the first. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Central heating is not usually a problem, as long as the plants are not close to radiators, but avoid watering during this period, as this will promote weak growth. Most cacti and succulents don't need pruning, although some of the taller, branching succulents can be trimmed back if they get too leggy.

This set would make a great gift for people who enjoy growing their own plants and for people who like cacti. Cacti have evolved to thrive in desert regions where conditions are hot, frost-free, and predominantly dry, which is why they make ideal house plants in the UK. For example, the seeds of a Christmas Cactus, a type of tropical cactus, can be harvested by removing the blueberry-like fruit and squeezing or tearing it open to produce small black seeds. Cactus and other succulent plant varieties are low maintenance and often found in the dusty wilderness of Mexico so you can imagine how hardy they are!
