Description

Sebastian has designed two other chicken lamps that we could find including one that has a light bulb that replaces the head of the taxidermied chicken, and other that replaces the chicken's head with an entire lamp shade. Third winter (where we are now) they stopped laying for a few months and are only now (in the middle of January) beginning to lay again (sometimes). A prime example of this is what happens to many plants and animals in the spring – as the days lengthen, the reproductive processes spring into life!

This natural process helps ensure chickens reproduce at the optimum time to raise a brood of chicks. So, take a look at your coop and see if you can do anything to improve your hen’s boudoir, as a thank-you for all those lovely eggs. Young chickens who come to age during the winter might take longer to start laying because of the aforementioned reason (not enough daylight). Some people believe the government is actively trying to stop the production of eggs, and others think that feed companies are cutting corners due to inflation and shortages.

Make sure you have a lot of soft nesting material in the nesting box to help prevent an egg from accidentally breaking when they drop its egg. Chickens detect light through their retinal cones in their eyes and in their pineal and hypothalamic glands in their brain. However, this egg production is dependent on the chicken having the optimum number of daylight hours. If your chicken is attacked by a predator or even if they are afraid of a nearby predator attack, the stress can cause them to stop laying for a time.If this happens gradually, it can stimulate maximum egg production to start earlier in the year and carry on into the winter. You can also leave them inside their coop/run for a few days to see if the issue is that they’re not laying in their nesting box.
