In his book, Enemies of Soulwinning, Hyles taught that one could not be born again unless the King James Version was used somewhere along the line in that person's life. The articles also alleged financial improprieties, accusing Hyles of using church money to lavish tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of gifts on Jennie, including a car, clothes, and home remodeling. Hyles died on February 6, 2001; a funeral was held at First Baptist Church of Hammond on February 10.

In the beginning, Schaap’s preaching was standard Hyles: emotional denunciations of the flock for not doing enough to please God. This book is narrated by Smith based on his own investigation into the murder of Farquhar, citing Field's own journals to show how he manipulated those around him and indulged in perverse fantasies that, although he later claimed with merely flights of fancy, contained very specific details about the acts he actually carried out.

In 2010, Elliott was cast as FBI Agent Russ Josephson on CSI: NY, a recurring role as Detective Jo Danville's ( Sela Ward) ex-husband, a role which he first portrayed in January 2011. He got up in front of a staff meeting—in front of the whole staff—and shared all kinds of confidential stuff that never should have been shared. The civil suit filed in Lake Superior Court in Gary claims the woman was "induced by agents" of the church in 1991 to ride a bus to attend Sunday school at First Baptist and when she was in the care of the church she was sexually assaulted, molested, battered and raped more than once until 1996.

Hyles then led the church to its status as an independent Baptist church—freeing it from its ties with the American Baptists. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison and registered as a sex offender, [41] [42] after which Cindy divorced Jack. Money poured into the church in other ways: the tithes collected each Sunday, a book-publishing arm, and various conferences and seminars. The lawsuit alleged this was a pattern of assault that can be traced to a Sunday in 1991, when a First Baptist teacher saw someone abusing the woman and reported it to church leaders and police, but the parents were never told and she kept going to church, where she was threatened into silence. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services investigated, but the cause of death could not be determined. In that year, the First Baptist bus route ministry consisted of 1,000 workers using 230 buses to ferry as many as 10,000 people every Sunday. In October 1997, attorney Vernon Petria filed a lawsuit against First Baptist Church of Hammond, accusing the church and its pastor of allowing a woman with an intellectual disability to be sexually assaulted for six years. Dubbing it “a training ground for pedophiles and serial rapists”—as one voice does in the opening minutes of the show’s first episode—seemingly couldn’t be more accurate.

They have a system where abusers and pedophiles can flourish, because you can’t challenge the men,” opines one. Let Us Prey: A Ministry of Scandals is a scathing exposé of the movement as a de facto cult that demanded subservience in every way imaginable, including sexually, with pastors—looked upon as unassailable due to their standing as the right hand of God—habitually taking advantage of their positions by molesting and raping young girls and then eliciting their silence with threats of further brutality and exile. Though the sermons “weren’t nearly as sexual in the beginning,” says Schaap’s former editor, “he was seductive. The Sleep Of Reason (I'm not sure what this title actually refers to) gives us the whole sad story about how, why (is there really a why? And, equally important, to attend the church-owned Hyles-Anderson College a couple of miles away, one of First Baptist’s biggest coffer fillers.
