About this deal

After that, it’s time to try something that can seem a little more daunting: stencils! Don’t worry though, they’re actually not that difficult to use, and can add a ton of character to your models. Plasma Spray Coatingsare part of the thermal spray coating family. Air plasma spray (APS) is a process used to produce high quality coatings by making use of a high energy source, very high temperatures, and inert spraying source (Argon) and high velocity particles. The result is a significantly pure coating. APS allows for the coating of some materials that would otherwise be impossible to melt such as thermal barrier coatings (i.e. ceramic coatings).

Never use for this purpose children plasticine. We can barely remove it once it is applied on the tank, and what is even worst, it can leave behind oily traces that can ruin our painting job.

Finally, define the other edge of the quarter the same way as you began, and then it’s time to get painting! Credit: Dexefiend All-purpose Abrasive Blasting masking tape. Tape is suitable for grit blast and air plasma applications. Construction is silicone rubber coated fiberglass complete with silicone adhesive. TacBloc– A soft, conformable, putty-like material for masking holes, grooves, key slots or any unique configuration. Unlike TacMold, TacBloc is formulated to adhere to metal in areas where anchorage is not possible. TacBloc is good for all forms of thermal spray. Also, as Khouli commented above, it is not usual to paint in such a manner. Usually everything is primed first and then whatever base chosen is applied, and in the case of road wheels the rubber rims are painted next and the whole assembled as appropriate. You also run into the issue that the paint you put on the rubber parts hasn’t had the benefit of being applied to primer and so won’t have a good grip on its own. Even if you did decide to put it all together as you have, you would still primer all of it and then use circle masks to cover the wheels as you paint the rubber edges. And as mentioned, the primer is a bit aggressive on the putty as most of AK’s products are acrylic-based if I recall correctly. I’m Rob, a normal guy who enjoys making models! I’m by no means a ‘professional’ modeller, but I am passionate, try my best and kits generally turn out well! All my builds are done at home in my spare time with typical model tools and accessories – all views and opinions are my own and not that of Jadlam.

So explore our AK Interactive elastic masking putty and add more detail to your scale model kits . It’s perfect for any military vehicle or figure model and is very easy to apply to bring out the most in your scale model kit decorating. If you are looking for even more textures and colours of masking putty, fluids, and tapes , we have a wide range to explore. Basic single sided glass cloth tape suitable for non-critical Abrasive Blasting masking. A good choice for single layer secondary masking. I wanted to achieve something like Games Workshop does for the camouflage on their Astra Militarum models, specifically the Catachans. Credit: Games Workshop Painter's tape is a general-purpose adhesive material that is typically made from a thin, yellow, or white color, paper-like material that is coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is often used to mask off areas that should not be painted, such as trim, windows, and door frames, as well as to create clean paint lines. However, Painter's one can be difficult to remove, and it may leave behind a residue when it is peeled off. With the first layer on, I repeated the process of applying masks where I wanted to retain the second layer of colour. By overlapping some of the masks you can create more interesting camo patterns. When I was happy with the second layer of masks I applied my second colour and once this was dry repeated the process of applying masks before adding my third colour. Its main advantage is that it can be applied to any surface, including curves and uneven surfaces, unlike all adhesive bands. It also allows for more precision and control, as it can be applied in thin layers to create fine lines and details that may be difficult to achieve with adhesive bands. As promised on my recent A-4 Skyhawk blog here is a short tutorial on masking complex camouflage patterns. But, wait a moment. Which camo should we apply on our tiny tanks? a soft- or hard-edge camo? In fact, both options are correct from the historical point of view. Some camos were painted with a brush while others with an airbrush. Therefore, the choice depends on historical data in case we are representing a historical unit, or on our own preference. In my opinion, I find the hard-edge camouflage more rewarding when painting small scales such as 12 and 15mm, since it facilitates the application of lights and shades that will create contrast and enhance the definition of the model. A soft-edge camo cannot be highlighted or darkened. Conversely, it is important to keep in mind that soft-edge camos are somehow more realistic (the scale model looks blurry, which is the main purpose of a camo) and are easily applied: we do not need masking and a single pass with the airbrush is enough. If you are interested, we discussed other aspects about this topic at the end of this post. In the previous image you can see two tanks in 12mm (1:144 scale) painted with exactly the same colors but one with a soft-edge camo and the other with a hard-edge camo. Which one do you like the most? If we want to add a third color to the camo we proceed in the same way: we apply a new layer of putty on top of the previous work (we do not remove the first layer of masking) and then paint the new color with shades and highlights.

The tape, on the other hand, is a type of adhesive material that is used to mask off plain areas that should not be painted. It is made from a thin, paper-like material that is coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is applied to the surface and when the paint is dry it can be removed. TacMold (A2023-A / A2023-B) masking compound is a 2 part silicone putty which is designed to withstand all forms of thermal spray including GF-HVOF and LF-HVOF. This putty is intended to assist with masking holes or complicated intricate profiles. In some cases, the compound is reusable. Heavy silicone coated fiberglass fabric for more demanding jobs requiring protection of large surfaces. This fabric is more abrasive resistant and more suitable for primary masking jobs (as well as secondary). Double Layered masking tape. Double Layer allows for single layer application for each job. In cases where 2 layers of standard tapes are required, the 6525-16 can reduce masking times by 50%.While I was painting my Valkyrie I realized I had large flat panels on the wings that I would need to do something with. As it was going into a Brood Brothers detachment the Genestealer Cults symbol was perfect for the wings. I decided to dust off my Ender 3 FDM 3D printer and give it a shot creating a stencil. A FDM printer doesn’t quite have the resolution for smaller stencils but for large vehicle panels like the wings on my Valkyrie it worked out great. Stencil in MatterControl When removing the band, it's best to do it while the acrylic paint is still wet, as it will be easier to remove and will not cause any damage to the surface.
