About this deal

Available in three colors, the retro design plays up the nostalgic feeling of a fresh-baked pie straight out of your grandma’s oven—which is really half the point of a comforting homemade pie in the first place. And if taken care of, it's likely that this pie dish might last generations and actually be someone's grandmother's pie dish one day. If the glassware does break, take care to let it cool before cleaning it up. Keep in mind that shattered glass creates many small particles and pieces that may be difficult to find. A handheld vacuum cleaner can help make sure you don’t accidentally miss any shards.

Cast iron might not be the very first thing that comes to mind when considering which pie pan to buy, but it's an option that we found to be worthy. As you might expect from a cast iron pie pan, the style is more rustic, although the gently wavy top edge is a nice touch that makes it feel like it's intended for baking delicate things. Since it's cast iron, it's also a little heavier than other pie pans, weighing a little over 3.5 pounds. But considering several of the other pie plates on this list weigh nearly 3 pounds, we were a little surprised that this option wasn't much heavier. Are Pyrex Glass Mixing Bowls Oven Safe?: Pyrex glass mixing bowls are oven safe up to 425°F as long as the oven is preheated. They are also microwave-safe but can’t be used on the stove or under the broiler. The bowls’ accompanying plastic lids are not oven-safe.

Jenny Kellerhals is our resident pastry and baking expert who tested our pie pan recommendations in her home kitchen. She completed a Baking & Pastry Program at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, and has worked in professional kitchens for over a decade. Not only is this pie plate relatively easy to find, but it also comes at a price that won’t leave a hole in your wallet. It all comes with the reliability of Pyrex’s signature tempered glass, used in their entire line of kitchen and bakeware—from measuring cups and casserole dishes to storage containers and dinnerware. When using any kind of kitchenware, safety is paramount. But this is especially true of glassware like Pyrex, which can shatter if not used properly. Yes, you can use a pie pan to bake a cake, but you should be aware that pie pans typically have angled sides and cake pans have straight sides. Because of this difference, if you're making a layered cake, the edges of the cake will be harder to frost. The cakes can be trimmed to get rid of the angled edges but may still be difficult to frost. Generally, cake pans should be used for baking cakes, but in a pinch, a pie pan will do if you aren't interested in how good the final product looks.

Types of products

Always preheat your oven before placing your Pyrex® dish inside it. While the glass is designed for temperatures typically used in baking, it can break when exposed to the direct heat element while the oven is preheating. Never expose hot glassware to cool water or a cold surface, and don’t take it straight from the fridge to the oven. The most important thing to remember about Pyrex cookware is that while the glassware is oven-safe, the plastic lids are not.

The biggest perk of a glass pie plate is being able to see what’s going on with your crust while it’s baking. Even when the top crust seems nicely golden brown, the bottom crust may need a few more minutes to fully cook, especially with juicy fruit filling in an insulated dish. A glass plate like the Pyrex Easy Grab Pie Plate takes the guesswork out of knowing if your crust is fully cooked.

OUR STORAGE RANGES

When removing Pyrex bakeware from the oven, pay attention to where you place it. Use both hands to move it, and make sure to set the cookware on a dry cloth surface such as a folded towel or potholder. So, if you’re hesitant to use your Pyrex in the oven and want to know the safety facts, keep reading.

When Pyrex glassware is exposed to radiant heat, like that of a heating oven, the side of the glassware closest to the heat source grows hot while the inside and other parts further away from the heat source remain cool. Donna Currie has written for The Spruce Eats since 2016. A seasoned recipe writer and gadget tester, she also wrote the cookbook Make Ahead Bread. Are Pyrex Lids Oven Safe?: Pyrex plastic lids are not oven-safe (they will melt in the oven). They’re designed to keep leftovers fresh in the fridge. If you need a cover in the oven, replace Pyrex plastic lids with aluminum foil. Pyrex glass lids that come with the casserole dishes are safe to use in a preheated oven. Allow Pyrex to come to room temperature before immersing in water or placing in the freezer, refrigerator, microwave or pre-heated oven.

When washing Pyrex® glassware by hand, use non-abrasive cleansers. To remove baked-on foods, soak the dish and use a plastic or nylon cleaning pad if scouring is needed. The short answer is yes; Pyrex glassware is completely safe to put in a preheated oven up to 425°F. But, Pyrex plasticware, including the plastic lids that come with the glassware, are not oven-safe. The plastic lids are designed for storage only and will melt if you put them in the oven.
