BUY HERE Spirit of Yorkshire, Filey Bay Moscatel Finish, 46% The English Smokey Single Malt, 43% The English Smokey Single Malt, 43% No, there are no requirements to be called an English whisky. Contrary to Scotch Whisky regulations, English whisky distilleries have more freedom to craft their spirits. They can use any type of cereal like oats, barley, wheat, and rye, then age the blend in other wood casks aside from oak. In 2015, Anno Distillery collaborated with Westerham Brewery to craft the first whisky in Kent County. Westerham Brewery is in charge of the fermentation, while the Anno Distillery in Marden is for the distillation process. Some of those sweet, vinous characteristics have transferred to the whisky, and it would make a great choice as a whisky aperitif or after-dinner sipper if you want to provide something a little different for you guests. The sweetness has flavours of fresh, juicy fruits, including peaches, oranges and something a little more tropical tasting. Even the spicy notes have a sweetness to them, with ginger the most obvious among them, and it has a long finish, helped by a slightly oily, viscous feel in the mouth. English whisky is on the march. New distilleries are cropping up the length and breadth of the country – from those with huge investments to smaller artisan producers doing things their own way – and they’re creating a buzz around the whisky drinking world.

However, in recent years, the whisky industry in England started to reawaken with new distilleries opening in different parts of the country. The list includes the Lakes Distillery located in Lake District, Cumbria; the East London Liquor Company in Bow Wharf; the Cotswolds Distillery; and the London Distillery Company. It has a lovely aromatic sweetness of fruit, vanilla, and white sugar. But the palate has more depth with flavors of apples, berries, kiwis, cherries, and cinnamon spice. 2. Anno You may have read the news about the recently founded English Whisky Guild (EWG). 15 founding distilleries - including Cooper King - came together at the start of 2022 to form the EWG. Its overarching vision is for English whisky to be recognised globally as a respected choice for whisky drinkers. Many more have now joined the EWG. Being small batch releases means there will be variations in each bottling, but the distillery has a clear house style which underpins each release. Among its key characteristics is an initial fruitiness that conjures various sweet desserts, from banoffee pie to cherry tarts, and a shaving of chocolate orange. They also introduce peated malt into the mix – just enough to allow for a hint of smoke on the aroma and a drier, gently lingering aftertaste. England, like Scotland, has a history of producing single malt whisky. However, the production of English single malt whisky ceased around 1905 with the closure of Lea Valley Distillery, in Stratford, London, by the Distillers Company Limited, one of the forerunners of Diageo.Adnams Distillery proudly entered the whisky market in 2014 with the release of Single Malt Whisky. All the barley used in production came from East Anglian. Its makers also added spirits that went through aging using American oak casks for more complexity. Our Ex-Bourbon whisky is aged in an American barrel, providing its light golden colour. The bourbon cask results in notes of vanilla, toffee, and subdued flavours of aged oak. They have recently branched out to do collaborations with retailers such as Harvey Nichols and Master of Malt. Look out for their superb range of blended whiskies, named The One.

Unlike gin and vodka, which can be distilled and bottled within the space of a few weeks, there is a legal requirement to age whisky for a minimum of three years. While whisky cannot provide an immediate cash flow, the higher value of the spirit is future oriented, especially with the potential for creativity in the revitalisation of English whisky to develop its own unique style. The popularity of rye whisky is on the rise and you can now find several English versions sitting alongside some of the more familiar American ryes at drinks retailers. Our favourite of the home grown crop is a product of the Oxford Artisan Distillery, who use heritage grains and release the whisky in small batches.Dan Szor established the Cotswolds Distillery in 2014, the same year that they also started distilling their Cotswolds Single Malt using locally grown barley. The Cotswolds Distillery eventually launched the region’s first whisky in 2017 after aging it in previously filled American oak casks. Keep an eye out for first and new releases from the distilleries on the English Whisky Map as we continue to bring exceptional whiskies to the table over the coming years. Do get in touch if you know of any more distilleries in the pipeline.

White Peak was founded in 2017 and born from a dream to make whisky and other spirits in Derbyshire. The distillery has also established itself at the heart of its local community and initiated projects to conserve woodland and waterways in the area. The blend rested in medium-charred bourbon casks for the next few years until the distillery released the spirit during World Whisky Day in 2019. It was a limited-edition release of only around 500 bottles making it more expensive than other brands. Rewind a decade and if you mentioned English whisky, then you would have been laughed out of town or had a funny face pulled at you. But what began as a quiet revolution in a corner of Norfolk has since gained some serious pace and spread to all four corners of the country.
