Neither in cost nor in content is it a product that will attract readers with refinement or visual impact. It was designed to be pleasant, immediate and immediate to use. Cooney I have no problem with sex in role playing games or lewd content in general, it's just that the game just seemed to suddenly turn from quasi-serious dungeon crawling to having classes entirely dedicated to sexual acts and each entry having more and more of the same thing. It went from classic fantasy to... IDK what it is anymore. Rules just got oddly specific, classes got extremely weird, and sadly, even though the game is good enough, supplements just keep delving further and further into weird territory without apparent explanation on what caused this sudden change of focus and the setting is every time merging more and more into the rules, to the point that removing pretty much all the "uncomfortable" stuff becomes less of an issue with reskinning and more with reworking entire systems...

I recently wrote a review about the Four Against Darkness core rulebook, which I invite you to read before continuing this article, especially if you don’t know exactly what type of product it is. Caves of the Kobold Slave-Masters is an adventure for 1st-2nd level characters divided into three parts lasting a couple of hours. It starts with a pre-generated dungeon, to continue instead with one to be generated randomly and ends with a decisive battle. Systems like Labyrinth Lord, Lamentations of the Flame Princess, Basic Fantasy Roleplaying, OSRIC, and (my personal favorite) Old School Essentials all bear a more than passing resemblance to the Moldvay Cook editions of D&D from the early 80s (and modules for one system can be very easily used in any of the others), but they each have their own unique communities that play them.

It is not a game-book or a choose-your-own-adventure book. There is no prose to read or numbered sections to go to, even if we could do something like that in a supplement. Four Against Darkness is a solitaire dungeon-delving game that may also be played cooperatively. No miniatures are needed. All you need is this book, a pencil, two dice, and grid paper. Updated - Version 3 with edits, additional monsters, and three categories to reference - Alphabetical, Book, and Type (Vermin, Minion, Boss, Weird Monster). Obviously, the Netherworld is not a dungeon, so there are rules for creating the hex-mapped territoryEach hex is characterizable with one of 10 possible types of terrain. The rest of the manual is a succession of customizations of the Four Against Darkness elements, including new monsters, discoveries, places, events, relationships and so on.

You choose four character types from the classic classes ( warrior, wizard, rogue, halfling, dwarf, barbarian, cleric, elf), equip them, and start adventuring in dungeons created by dice rolls and by your choices. When you enter a room, you generate its content on a series of random tables. You will meet monsters, fight them, hopefully defeat them (or decide that discretion is the better part of valor!), you'll manage your resources (healing, spells, life points, equipment), grab treasure, dodge traps, find clues, and even accept quests from the monsters you meet. Your characters can level up and become better at what they do, but it will not be easy.The game experience can be rather deadly. There is also a sadistic saving throw vs. immediate death (“save or die”) mechanic. Leaders have been added to guide the monsters, there are six new spells and over 40 specific advanced skills for certain classes. Allies have been added, divided into mercenaries and artisans, with new secrets and various other optional rules. For example training, the plot for the campaign or madness.
