The 4K UHD and the Blu-ray disc sadly have ZERO extras on board, but the audio and video experience is more than worth the expenditure along with the fun story. There is a substantial amount of activity in the low end that pulses through you in the most unsettling way. Obviously given its digital source, there’s no inherent film grain and none appears to have been added to give texture, so the entire image is spotless…at times a little too spotless, the image sometimes looking a little too digital. We were not sent the accompanying 1080p SDR disc to do any comparisons against but I would wager that disc struggling with the deep shadows here.

Yeah, we’ve got the Book of the Dead, there’s a scene with a chainsaw and the name – other than that, I was hard pressed to find any similarities (or any pleasure watching this). But the sheer fact that there isn't even a commentary track or a small EPK featurette is flabbergasting in 2023. The skin tones are a little darker than usual, but that's a stylistic choice and not something to do with the transfer.This is mainly utilized for some spacial effects, screams and whatever else the evil spirits circling our speakers want. What Alvarez did so well in his version was bring the same high intensity mania of Sam Raimi’s original films, and Cronin follows suit, giving Rise a continuity of feel with its illustrious predecessors. And it’s this grim potency that gives the film’s insane gore levels its, dare I say it, fun – it’s an incredibly thin tightrope tonally for it to walk: it takes the torture meted out, be it the relatively low-level battery of chewing broken glass or the explosive impacts of a point-blank shot gun blast, very seriously, yet it never becomes po-faced.
